LiftMaster Garage Door Opener Troubleshooting – Garage Opener Diagnostic Codes
This article is written for LiftMaster and Chamberlain garage door openers. Both garage door openers are made by the Chamberlain Group and share the same diagnostic codes and error indicators.
Garage doors come with self-diagnostic capabilities to alert homeowners of any issues with their garage system. Typically, the self-diagnostic feature is found on the back panel of the garage door opener. Unless you’re experiencing a garage door emergency, as long as you know the diagnostic codes for your garage door opener, you may be able to fix the issue yourself.
LiftMaster and Chamberlain Opener Codes
There are two types of self-diagnostic indicators. Some openers have a small LED light located next to the Learn button on the back panel. It will flash a set number of times to alert the homeowner that the current issue. Other garage door openers use two arrow buttons to flash the diagnostic code.
Liftmaster garage door openers are programmed with their self-diagnosis capabilities that allow homeowners to understand the problems impacting their garage door openers quickly. When a garage door stops working, the cause may be easier to fix than you may initially think.

The garage door keypad or handheld remote may have a stuck button.
Locate each device and remove the batteries one at a time to find the faulty device. Change the batteries. If the problem persists, replace the device.
Up Arrow Flashes 1 Time Down Arrow Flashes 1 Time
The garage door will refuse to close, and the garage door opener lights will flash.
Your garage door safety sensors may not be properly installed, connected, or wires may have become cut. Locate sensor wires and check for damage.
Up Arrow Flashes 1 Time Down Arrow Flashes 2 Times.
The garage door will refuse to close, and the garage door opener lights will flash.
There is a short or reversed wire for the safety sensors. Check along the wire for staples and replace the wire if needed.
Up Arrow Flashes 1 Time Down Arrow Flashes 4 Times.
The garage door keypad refuses to function.
The garage door keypad may be faulty, or the wires may have shorted. Check for any problems along the wire and replace them if needed.
Up Arrow Flashes 1 Time Down Arrow Flashes 4 Times.
The garage door will refuse to close, and the garage door opener lights will flash.
Safety sensors have become misaligned or are currently obstructed. Locate both sensors at the entrance of the garage and realign sensors until LEDs stop blinking. Remove any items that may be blocking the sensor light beam.
Up Arrow Flashes 1 Time Down Arrow Flashes 5 Times.
The garage door will move a few inches and then come to a stop.
Manually open and close the garage door and check for any bindings or obstructions such as broken springs or drums. Check wiring to the travel module and the logic board for any problems. Replace travel module if necessary.
Up Arrow Flashes 1 Time Down Arrow Flashes 5 Times.
There is no movement from the garage door, only a single click from the opener.
Manually open and close the garage door and check for any bindings or obstructions such as broken springs or drums. Ensure the trolley is not stuck on either up or down stops. If the operator has an AC motor, it may have become overheated and should be allowed to sit
for 30 minutes. Replace the logic board if necessary.
Up Arrow Flashes 1 Time Down Arrow Flashes 5 Times.
The garage door opener makes a humming sound for 1 to 2 seconds, and there is no movement.
Manually open and close the garage door and check for any obstructions blocking your garage door. Check for a broken spring or locked door. Make sure the trolley is not stuck on with up or
down stops. If necessary, replace the motor.
Up Arrow Flashes 1 Time Down Arrow Flashes 6 Times.
The garage door coasts after it has reached its stopping point.
The travel limits need to be set again to the point where the door reaches the final end positions after coasting. If your garage door has come off the track or has become unbalanced, you'll
need a trained professional to balance your door.
Up Arrow Flashes 2 Times.Down Arrow Flashes 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5 Times.
No movement is coming from the garage door.
The logic board needs to be replaced.
Up Arrow Flashes 3 Times. Down Arrow Flashes 2 Times.
The garage is unable to retain its position, or the travel limits cannot be set.
There may be issues with the garage opener travel module, and it may need to be replaced. This diagnostic code is expected after power has returned to the opener. Attempt a full
open/close cycle to fix the problem. If a problem persists, replace the travel module.
Up Arrow Flashes 3 Times. Down Arrow Flashes 3 Times.
The battery status LED on the opener will continue to flash green.
The garage door battery backup may have a charging circuit error. Replace the logic board if
necessary.
Up Arrow Flashes 3 Times. Down Arrow Flashes 1 – 4 Times.
The garage door begins to move but then stops/reverses to the starting position.
Disengage the garage door and attempt to open and close it manually. Check to see if the garage spring has snapped and that there are no obstructions on the track. If there are no obstructions, attempt to reprogram the garage door travel limits. If the garage door is binding
or sticking, seek help from a professional garage technician.
Up Arrow Flashes 4 Times.Down Arrow Flashes 5 Times.
The garage door will move a few inches and then come to a stop.
There is an issue with the garage opener travel module. Check and make sure travel module
connections are fully functional. If not, replace the travel module.
Up Arrow Flashes 4 Times.Down Arrow Flashes 6 times.
The garage door refuses to close, and the opener lights begin to flash repeatedly.
The safety sensors may have become obstructed or misaligned. Locate them at the entrance of your garage opening and realign sensors until sensor LEDs stop blinking.
AC LiftMaster and Chamberlain Garage Door Openers
Unlike the previous garage door openers; arrow buttons, these openers use a single LED to flash a set number of times to diagnose a problem. The LED will flash for a few seconds and then stop before flashing again. The chart below will break down the number of flashes and what they mean.
